Nathive, the usable image editor

One thing that is still missing on Linux (or to be more precise on GNOME) is a easy to use and modern image editor. The GIMP rocks, but it fails in terms of simplicity. Many people need a simple to use image editor. They don’t need fancy masks, layers and hundreds of brushes. They need basic tools, nothing else. They want to mark screenshots with hand painted arrows, they want to mark Auntie Lucy on a picture of Grandma’s Birthday etc. with a little bit of text. You don’t need The GIMP for this…

On Windows a lot of people use Microsoft Paint for those tasks. Yes the program is pretty crappy and misses a lot of useful functions. But Paint fulfilles the need of basic image editing and many people don’t need much more. So I make the assertion: Linux needs a (better) MS Paint as preinstalled image editor! Hopefully my wish comes true, especially since there’s a young project called Nathive which tries to create an GTK-based easy to use but powerful image editor…

Network (forcedeth) won’t start after kernel 2.6.29 shut the system off

A mean bug/phenomenon took an hour of free time from me and create some headache… I tried to use partimage to make a backup of a hard disk I salvaged from an old computer. Since there is no package for partimage inside the archives of Ubuntu Jaunty, I downloaded the current version of SystemRescueCd and used it to do the job… The unpleasant surprise came, when i rebooted my system into Ubuntu Jaunty.

Package source with bleeding edge graphic drivers for Ubuntu

Today Bryce Harrington of Ubuntu announced on the Ubuntu Developer the following info…

A little Jaunty Release Day present from the Ubuntu-X team. :-)

From past releases, we know that often people want a way to try out
newer drivers than were included in the official release. To make life
a little easier, we’ve put together a PPA with some newer X drivers:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

You can see that already we have new stable versions of nearly all the
major video drivers for your video-ing pleasure.

I can’t promise that we’ll be keeping it up to date or fixing bugs, but
we’ll do what we can. We’re going to treat it as a “stable” PPA, and
only post stuff we feel is likely to be better in some respect than
what’s in the release.

Bryce

The Ubuntu developers offer now a package source for Ubuntu Hardy, Intrepid und Jaunty with bleeding edge graphic drivers for all major graphic cards.

Shutdown the system without root permissions with PolicyKit

I’m using Ubuntu Jaunty since a couple of weeks and the longer I’m using the new version, the more nice things I find. One is the on going integration of PolicyKit into GNOME. The following use-case was until Jaunty pretty hard to solve…

You’ve got a Ubuntu system with multiple user accounts. People use either the “fast user switch” applet or SSH into the machine. As soon as more than one user is logged into the computer, standard “desktop-users” can’t shut down the machine. If they try, a pop-up form PolicyKit appears requesting root privileges. Without an administrative user in range, the computer stayed on.

Portable Ubuntu

On my still unsuccessful search for a solution to run a virtual Linux from an usb-stick, which doesn’t need administrative rights on Microsoft Windows, I stumbled upon Portable Ubuntu.

They chose a pretty clever way to run a virtual Linux environment. Based on CoLinux an image of Ubuntu “Hardy Heron” 8.04 gets started inside a virtual machine. The graphic interface interacts via a X-Server for Windows called Xming with the windows desktop. This way you’ve got a portable solution to run a Ubuntu Linux inside Windows without the need to install a single program on your computer.

Compiz inside a virtual machine with VirtualBox 2.2

How do you call it to install the beta of a new operating system inside the beta of a virtual machine based on the beta of a new operating system? Yep: Stupid! So, don’t try this at home…

A couple of months ago i wrote (Sorry, German only, I didn’t translate that blog posting yet) that since VirtualBox 2.1 it is possible to run 3D applications within a virtual Microsoft Windows. Now, with VirtualBox 2.2 coming in a couple of weeks, it is possible to use 3D acceleration on Linux hosts, too! Sun publishes the Beta of VirtualBox 2.2. So if you’re interested – and don’t rely on VirtualBox – you can grep a .deb file of the current beta 2 and try the new features.

Build your own anonymous Firefox

Google introduced this feature in Google Chrome and Mozilla will include it in Firefox 3.5. Webbrowsers with a “anonymous mode” – some people will call it “porn mode” – where no personal information is saved – are sexy…

Fans of Firefox don’t have to wait until Firefox 3.5 will be release, you can have this feature in Firefox 3.0 too. But you have to do this by hand. So, what do you have to do?
