Scan a page page with a single push of a button

Quite often I’ve got to scan documents and save them as PDF. Usually I do this with gscan2pdf but for just one page even such a great tool like gscan2pdf is too much. It takes more time to start the program, go through the menus etc. than the scan process itself.

As a simple work around I wrote scan2pdf. scan2pdf is a simple and small programm for the shell. It searches for a scanner, saves the settings to a config file, scans and saves the result into a PDF on your desktop. Continue Reading →

Redirect your sound with pulseaudio

I often stumple upon users who have problems playing audio. A common problem is that Adobe Flash (or another application) doesn’t play any sound even though other programs like Totem, Rhythmbox etc. work fine.

But to be frank, this programm is a pain in the ass. It’s proprietary, it needs kernel modules, you’ve got to patch it to run on current kernels. In short: Don’t use it, use vpnc. I’ll help you with it…

Run Ubuntu Server inside VirtualBox

When you install Ubuntu Server inside VirtualBox as a virtual machine you might run into problems. The installation itself works fine, but as soon as you reboot you’ll see this message

The kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU 0:6
Unable to boot – please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU

and Ubuntu server won’t boot. This is caused by ubuntu’s server kernel which supports Physical Address Extension (short PAE) which increases the maximum physical memory size from 4 Gib to 64 GiB, so that you can use more than 4Gib RAM even when you don’t use 64-Bit operating system.
