A little Jaunty Release Day present from the Ubuntu-X team.
From past releases, we know that often people want a way to try out
newer drivers than were included in the official release. To make life
a little easier, we’ve put together a PPA with some newer X drivers:
You can see that already we have new stable versions of nearly all the
major video drivers for your video-ing pleasure.
I can’t promise that we’ll be keeping it up to date or fixing bugs, but
we’ll do what we can. We’re going to treat it as a “stable” PPA, and
only post stuff we feel is likely to be better in some respect than
what’s in the release.
The Ubuntu developers offer now a package source for Ubuntu Hardy, Intrepid und Jaunty with bleeding edge graphic drivers for all major graphic cards.
This way they full fill the wish/urge of many Ubuntu users who want to use the latest drivers. But be warned: Using this source might harm your system. Problems with these drivers, problems upgrading to the next version of Ubuntu might occur. Whoever likes to take the risk, should add the lines
## https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/ deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main
(of course you’ve got to adjust these lines according to your Ubuntu version) via
$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
or every other text editor with root permissions to the file /etc/apt/sources.list on your system. Those package sources are signed with keys, apt-get will complain that their are missing, so add them via
$ sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com AF1CDFA9
After that your are set. Update the drivers via the standard update routines, or e.g. with apt-get
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
It worked on my system fine without any problems. For me this update was quite important. I hoped to get the of this nasty bug, where part of my screen gets black….
I don’t know if this issue is related to the X-Server, Compiz or the nvidia driver, but i silently hope that the new nvidia driver helps…
