Since January 2006, I\u2019ve been writing on Linux und Ich about Linux, distributions like Ubuntu, Debian and Arch Linux, free software and hardware that gets along well with Linux. Add to that Android, the Raspberry Pi, my homelab and, every now and then, digital policy when it affects the open-source world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t like repeating news you can read everywhere anyway. I\u2019d rather write how-tos I\u2019ve worked through myself, reviews and my take on what\u2019s happening in the Linux world. I care less about being complete than about you actually solving your problem after reading. The blog is written in German; here in the English edition I translate selected articles. Comments, emails or a hello on the Fediverse are always welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How it all started<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first article went online on January 11, 2006, and was about a Wi-Fi stick: 3Com WL-305 unter Ubuntu Breezy<\/a> (in German). Back then my computer ran Ubuntu, and the blog was mostly a notepad for fixes I would otherwise have had to dig up again the hard way. Over the years, that turned into more than 1,600 articles and around 22,600 comments from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topics grew along with me. At some point Ubuntu became Arch Linux, then came Android, the Raspberry Pi, a small homelab and, most recently, local AI on my own hardware. For a living I write for TUXEDO Computers<\/a>; before that I was with LinuxUser and Raspberry Pi Geek<\/a>. Through all of it, Linux und Ich has stayed what it was from day one: my own blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the blog looks like today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s design is a block theme I built myself. The fonts live on my own server instead of Google\u2019s, there\u2019s a dark color scheme and a reading aid for larger text and more line spacing. New articles show up on the front page, older ones you\u2019ll find through the topics at the top of the page or via search \u2013 on the desktop just as well as on your phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What it used to look like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since 2006 the blog has worn quite a few outfits. In the very beginning it still ran on Drupal and only later moved to WordPress. In 2010 it was green on black and called itself \u201cEin Blog \u00fcber Ubuntu, Linux, Android und IT\u201d (a blog about Ubuntu, Linux, Android and IT); 2012 brought the light design with the big penguin banner. From 2017 Linux und Ich looked like a magazine with large lead images, and in 2024 much calmer. The front pages come from the Internet Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What it\u2019s all about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most of it revolves around Linux itself: in the German original, more than 1,000 articles sit in the GNU\/Linux category, 281 are tagged Ubuntu and 149 GNOME. Add 189 articles on Android, 67 on hardware and 42 on the Raspberry Pi. The newest corner is the homelab: whatever runs on the small server under my desk has made it into 58 posts so far. The English edition picks the articles that are most useful beyond the German-speaking world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
