A while ago, we’ve announced our plans to add Linux support as one of the features of our digital platform, with 100 games on the launch day sometime this fall. We’ve put much time and effort into this project and now we’ve found ourselves with over 50 titles, classic and new, prepared for distribution, site infrastructure ready, support team trained and standing by, and absolutely no reason to wait until October or November. We’re still aiming to have at least 100 Linux games in the coming months, but we’ve decided not to delay the launch just for the sake of having a nice-looking number to show off to the press. It’s not about them, after all, it’s about you. So, one of the most popular site feature requests on our community wishlist is granted today: Linux support has officially arrived on GOG.com!

Aus den ursprünglich angedachten 100 Titeln zum Start sind nur 50 Spiele geworden, dafür ist Ende Juli auch noch lange nicht der Herbst in Sicht. Das Angebot an Linux-Spielen bei GOG.com soll weiter stetig wachsen. Wer schon zuvor Spiele bei GOG.com gekauft hat, kann diese nun ohne Aufpreis auch in der Linux-Version herunterladen. GOG.com bietet die Spiele als distributionsunabhängige TAR.GZ-Archiv an, die man einfach nur in einem beliebigen Verzeichnis auspacken muss. Alternativ gibt es DEB-Pakete für Ubuntu und Linux Mint, die wahrscheinlich auch unter Debian zum Laufen zu bekommen sein sollten.

For both native Linux versions, as well as special builds prepared by our team, GOG.com will provide distro-independent tar.gz archives and support convenient DEB installers for the two most popular Linux distributions: Ubuntu and Mint, in their current and future LTS editions. Helpful and responsive customer support has always been an important part of the GOG.com gaming experience. We wouldn’t have it any other way when it comes to Linux, and starting today our helpdesk offers support for our official Linux releases on Ubuntu and Mint systems.

We’re initially going to be launching our Linux support on GOG.com with the full GOG.com treatment for Ubuntu and Mint. That means that right now, we’re hammering away at testing games on a variety of configurations, training up our teams on Linux-speak, and generally getting geared up for a big kick-off in the fall with at least 100 Linux games ready for you to play. This is, of course, going to include games that we sell which already have Linux clients, but we’ll also be bringing Linux gamers a variety of classics that are, for the first time, officially supported and maintained by a storefront like ours.

Neu bei GOG ist nun, dass man in Zukunft auch Linux-Spiele anbieten möchte. Darunter fallen zum einen Spiele, die bereits unter Linux laufen, es sollen aber zum anderen auch Spiele angeboten werden, die zum ersten mal unter Linux lauffähig gemacht wurden. Zum Start soll das Angebot mindestens 100 Titel umfassen, und Ubuntu und Linux Mint als Distributionen unterstützt werden. Zum Startzeitpunkt macht GOG jedoch noch keine konkreten Angaben, noch arbeitet man erst seit wenigen Monaten am Linux-Start.
