Der Horror-Film The Tunnel wird offiziell über BitTorrent vetrieben, jeder wird den Film ganz legal und kostenlos über P2P herunterladen können. Wer will wird eine DVD-Box mit zusätzlichem Material kaufen können oder kann als Sponsor einzelne Frames (für einen Dollar pro Frame) oder ganze Teile des Films erstehen , ein Viertel der rund 135.000 Frames des Films sind auf diese Weise schon verkauft worden.

The Internet was meant to be a tool to connect us. It was meant to break down borders and liberate. Now we have an entire generation who are being labelled criminals for using that tool. But perhaps rather than wasting millions of dollars fighting a losing battle against internet piracy, we should try and find a way to embrace the possibilities that this new world brings…

That’s the thought that inspired this project. We believe that if we stop fighting the peer to peer networks, they could become the biggest revolution we have ever seen in the way we share entertainment and information.

After spending years being frustrated by what we saw as the movie industry’s short-sighted and conventional outlook towards the online community, we decided it was time to try something different – The 135K Project was born.

We figured that movie posters and collectable frames from movies are being sold every day, so what if we could raise the money to make “The Tunnel” by selling every individual frame of it? We would be able to make a movie unencumbered by a studio’s need for box office. We could do what we got into the industry to do in the first place. Tell stories we like and get them out there so people could enjoy them.

What’s the key to doing that? You.

Whatever you can do. It will all help and show the world there might just be another way. Who knows where that might lead?

Am 19. Mai soll der Torrent zum Film veröffentlich werden. Gleichzeitig wird auch der Vertrieb der DVD beginnen, der immerhin von Paramount Pictures übernommen wird. Das Ganze ist also nicht nur ein Versuch einen Indie-Film wie Projekt London oder Experimente wie Sintel über das Netz zu pushen, sondern wohl ein ernsthafter Testbalon eines der großen Produzenten in Hollywood. Findet da endlich wirklich ein Umdenken statt?

Zum Film selber sage ich lieber nichts, irgendwie erinnert er mich verdammt an das Blair Witch Project. Richtig innovativ wird der Streifen daher nicht sein. Ohne die Aktion würde er wahrscheinlich in den Regalen der Videotheken verstauben, ohne dass ihn jemals ein größeres Publikum zu Gesicht bekommen würde. Nichts desto trotzt, das Vertriebskonzept scheint aufzugehen und selbst Hollywood ist mit im Boot. Hoffen wir mal dass sich die Aktion nicht nur als einmaliger Test herausstellt.

Was ich persönlich jedoch etwas schade finde ist, dass man es verpasst hat eine Lizenz für den Film zu wählen, die klipp und klar sagt was ich denn nun mit dem Film machen darf. Oder in anderen Worten, warum hat man keine Creative Commons Lizenz gewählt? Genau für solche Zwecke wurde die CC ja ins Leben gerufen.
