Linus Torvalds transformed technology twice — first with the Linux kernel, which helps power the Internet, and again with Git, the source code management system used by developers worldwide. In a rare interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Torvalds discusses with remarkable openness the personality traits that prompted his unique philosophy of work, engineering and life. „I am not a visionary, I’m an engineer,“ Torvalds says. „I’m perfectly happy with all the people who are walking around and just staring at the clouds … but I’m looking at the ground, and I want to fix the pothole that’s right in front of me before I fall in.“

…making binaries for Linux desktop applications is a major fucking pain in the ass. You don’t make binaries for Linux, you make binaries for Fedora 19, Fedora 20, maybe even RHEL5 from 10 years ago. You make binaries for Debian Stable…well actually no, you don’t make binaries for Debian Stable because Debian Stable has libraries that are so old that anything built in the last century doesn’t work.
…and this [„Don’t Break Userspace!“] is like, a big deal for the kernel, and I put a lot of effort into explaining to all the developers that this is a really important thing, and then all the distributions come in, and they screw it all up. Because they break binary compatibility left and right.

I would love to attend the kernel summit this year. Firstly, I imagine that I should show up in person to accept the award that Linus gave us a few days back:-) […] I’m curious what other areas people mightexpect me/NVIDIA to contribute to […] Are there any new/novel ideas I could take back to NVIDIA to help persuade any kind of opening up?

Stop working on the nvidia kernel driver. The things that you consider trade secrets are almost entirely in your 3D engine. Move your 3D driver to userspace and use nouveau for command submission. It’d still somewhat suck having a closed 3D driver, but it’d be far better than the current situation of having two drivers for the same hardware.

Linus spricht vor der Aalto University Center for Entrepreneurship, und ganz ehrlich, der Ausspruch macht mir Linus noch sympathischer (ab 49:40): „NVidia has been one of the worst trouble spots we’ve had with hardware manufacturers, and that is really sad, because NVidia tries to sell chips, a lot of chips, into the Android market, and Nvidia is the single worst company we ever dealt with, so NVidia: Fuck you!“ Recht hat er, auch wenn NVidia-Karten in meinen Systemen immer gut funktioniert haben, auch wenn ich mit reinen Intel-Systemen mittlerweile deutlich happier bin.

☕ Linux und Ich unterstützen
Danke, dass du Linux und Ich liest.
